Crispy Chilli Beef (with Sweet Chilli) - Chinese Shredded Beef

500g flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain

1/2 cup cornflour (cornstarch)

1/4 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1 cup vegetable oil (for frying)

1 red bell pepper, sliced

1 green bell pepper, sliced

1 onion, sliced

4 cloves garlic, minced

2-3 tablespoons ginger, finely chopped

3 tablespoons soy sauce

3 tablespoons sweet chilli sauce

2 tablespoons oyster sauce

1 teaspoon sesame oil

1 tablespoon rice vinegar

1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)

Spring onions, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions
 

Prep the Beef: In a bowl, mix the flank steak with salt, black pepper, and set aside for 10 minutes. This will help to tenderize the meat.

    Prepare the Battering Mixture: In another bowl, whisk together cornflour, all-purpose flour, and baking powder. Dredge the sliced beef in the flour mixture until thoroughly coated. Shake off any excess flour.

      Fry the Beef: In a large skillet or wok, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Once hot, carefully add half of the coated beef strips and fry until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes. Remove the beef and drain on a paper towel. Repeat with the remaining beef.

        Sauté Veggies: In the same oil, add the sliced red and green bell peppers, onion, garlic, and ginger. Stir-fry for about 3-4 minutes, until the veggies are slightly tender but still crisp.

          Make the Sauce: In a bowl, combine soy sauce, sweet chilli sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil, rice vinegar, and crushed red pepper flakes (if using). Mix well.

            Combine Everything: Add the fried crispy beef into the skillet with the sautéed vegetables. Pour the sauce over the mixture and toss everything together until the beef and vegetables are well coated with the sauce. Cook for an additional 2 minutes.

              Garnish and Serve: Remove from heat, garnish with chopped spring onions, and serve hot with steamed rice or noodles.
